May 1-3
There is no better excuse than a three-day weekend to escape to Germany. My friend Beverley and I traveled to Munich, Germany to see the sites, eat the food and drink the drinks!
Though we arrived in some drizzle, the transportation was quite smooth into the city. We stayed in the Jedermann Hotel where we enjoyed our own bathroom, wifi and the large breakfast spread. This was quite different than the hostel experience I have gotten used to J
Our first day, we braved the rain and ventured to the Olympic Village, BMW museum, and Hofbrauhaus. I was surprised by how easily we were able to navigate the city via metros and buses. However, I must contribute most of this ease to Beverley’s keen skills. Another pleasant surprise was our ability to communicate…in English!
Walking around the center of Munich gave us this sense of a small town with big city perks to which we heard the locals agree. There was so much to do and see, but it didn’t have the noise and chaos that Rome seems to portray.
Day two, we awoke to a beautifully sunny day that was not too hot and not too cold. We took the train to Dachau where we experienced some “dark” tourism learning about the Holocaust. The stirring of emotions was far greater than anything I have experienced in Rome including the Colosseum or catacombs. It is far beyond my comprehension how man can do something such as this to man. When we visited the camp, it was a day before the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Dachau Camp, which was made possible by two American soldiers.
Ending the tourism of the day on a positive note, we toured the Nymphenburg Palace and tasted more authentic German food. It is crazy how a two-hour flight can plunge you into a completely different country and culture. I think I will enjoy these rather short weekend trips seeing Europe.

Stay tuned =D
