The Island...
This was my first trip to an island, when I saw tour signs I thought of the Gilligan's Island theme song... Aynway, Sal was beautiful. The beaches were pristine! As weather was cooling in Italy, it was nice to escape for a bit of a vacation on the beach. Though I was in a touristy, developed area most of the time, I saw a bit of kite surfing and beach soccer happening by the locals...perhaps next time I will
have time to join in :) My taxi driver said that a lot of development has occurred in Sal over the past 20 years. The tourists have positive and negative effects to the area, but overall they are welcomed by the locals because it brings in business.
I rented an AirBNB for the trip, but it didn't end up working out. Luckily I met a very nice FAO consultant for the Cabo Verde team who was willing to split a hotel room with me! A 5-Star hotel with all you care to eat and drink was not something I had budgeted for, but took full advantage :)
The Conference...
This was an amazing experience to attend the 17th Annual Global Child Nutrition Forum in Sal Island of Cabo Verde! Where for one week, country ministers, industry partners, UN agencies and NGO representatives for school feeding and meal programmes throughout the world gathered to discuss Innovations in Financing for Nutrition-Based National School Meal Programmes. My role was to assist the GCNF conference team in logistical issues, as well as the FAO team with our technical consultation booth. I enjoyed being a part of the wonderful event and getting to network with many professionals in the area of nutrition. School food and nutrition is rising on the global agenda and I am excited to see how much this field develops in years tocome.
