June 11-14
This trip all started when I met Daniella, a fellow intern from Peru in the FAO Fisheries department through my friend Geovanna. She told me she was going to Barcelona and Nick (my friend I visited in Madrid highly recommended it). Daniella said she was going by herself, but would love some company…so I booked the flight!
Daniella and I took a long weekend and left after work on Thursday. Of course we made time to get gelato from our favorite shop! When we were sitting in the airport getting ready to leave Rome, Daniella mentioned that there were 2 beds in the AirBnB that I had booked. She asked how we wanted to split them up, as there was a picture of one large and one small bed. I said, well we are there for 2 nights, we can just switch. Ya, this is logical and fair and she agreed. Then, she said, wait we are there 3 nights (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and fly out Sunday). I said no just 2. We checked the booking and I only had booked for Friday and Saturday night! Panic struck! We were sitting in FCO waiting for our super delayed flight and charging our phones with only hours before we would be in Barcelona.
Ironically enough, Daniella has an (awesome) uncle that lives just outside of Barcelona who had joked to her that we weren’t allowing for enough spontaneity having planned the weekend out in advance. Well here was our forced opportunity to be spontaneous! We have no place to sleep our first night in Barcelona, what do we do?!
So we changed my phone language setting to Spanish and Daniella texted her uncle in Barcelona to see if he could help us. Thank the Lord our flight was delayed so long and we had this random conversation about who is sleeping where. In the end, we stayed at a hostel just down the street from our AirBnB and enjoyed it very much! Another bonus to this situation, Daniella is no longer opposed to staying in hostels.
The rest of the trip was super amazingly beautiful. In fact, my favorite cathedral that I have seen so far is the Sagrada Familia. The stain glass work is impeccable and the architecture will leave you in awe. We saw so much wonderful and unique art in Barcelona. The city has a wonderful beach town feel to it. LOTs of tourists though.
It was great fun to meet up with Daniella’s uncle and aunt on Sunday just before we left. We spent the day at the beach and had a nice picnic. The trip wouldn’t be complete without one last burst of adrenaline,. While saying goodbye in the train station parking lot, our train arrived. We found ourselves sprinting to catch the train to the airport. In the end, Barcelona was a beautiful city with beautiful people and tasty food. Oh and the weather was great! I would love to go back!
