March 17-24
My journey begins with a week in Dublin visiting my friend Maura, who I met at my McDonald’s internship last summer. Starting at O’Hare, I landed in Newark but missed my flight to Dublin due to weather in Newark. Along with many others, I found myself standing in a 3 hour line at United’s customer service desk. Luckily, I met two wonderfully optimistic and patient women (Natalie and Katie, pictured right) also traveling to Ireland. We were quite fortunate to catch a flight out to London with approximate arrival in Dublin around 2pm the following day. I was up for anything that didn’t have me staying the night in the Newark airport.
The flight to London was the most sparse I have ever seen. I had an entire row to myself and was able to lie down completely and catch a few z’s. Eggs Benedict and English tea certainly hit the spot for a morning brunch in London at the Perfectionist’s Café. Next stop, Dublin!
Unlike my luggage, Maura met me at the airport when I got in around 3pm. I was amazed by the wifi available on the busses! I am getting spoiled with this; I hope Rome has wifi on the buses too. The green land is beautiful and many St. Patrick’s Day decorations are still up. Maura lives in a lovely apartment in the city center. I had a hamburger with the famous Irish beef and a half-pint of Guinness for my first dinner. Tomorrow we are headed to Galway, hoping my luggage will show up before we head out. I am thankful that I packed the essentials in my carry on.
After sleeping half of the day away, I accompanied Maura and her roommates to a nutrition communications class. This got me very curious about the nutrition norms of Ireland and about their governmental regulations and recommendations. Their equivalence to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the Irish Nutrition and Dietetics Institute, which is currently undergoing a re-branding campaign for the public. After class we had a cappuccino and the ever-appropriately-named treats of delicacy at her cousins’ coffee shop Clement and Pekoe. Fabulous!
Stay tuned to hear about the trip to Galway this weekend.
Ciao for now,
Rachel
